Dental Crowns

Dental crowns are added to teeth after damage that necessitates restoration or replacement with a dental implant.  Dental crowns are restorative coverings that cover a section of the tooth that has been damaged.  Dental crowns can also cover the entirety of a compromised tooth.  If your tooth is completely healthy, the addition of a dental crown might also be necessary.  Adding a crown has the potential to improve the tooth’s size, color and shape, improving the beauty of your smile all the more.

A dental crown covering might also be necessary after you undergo a root canal treatment.  The dental crown provides the tooth with full protection, ensuring the tooth has as much longevity as possible.  The dental crown treatment ideal for you might not be optimal for another patient.  Our Miami dentist, Dr. Alvarez, will analyze your teeth and determine the best approach in the context of restoration, cosmetic treatment and the addition of a crown.

The dental crown procedure typically requires two appointments.  The initial appointment is centered on the taking of x-rays to provide an accurate assessment and ensuring the tooth is strong enough for the addition of a dental crown.  The dentist will also go over the options for crown types including their respective materials.  The tooth will be prepared with the removal of damaged and decayed sections.

Light filing will be performed along the enamel so the crown can be securely placed into position.  Impressions are taken so the crown doesn’t interfere with the movement of teeth as you bite down.  Once the crown is delivered from the dental lab, the dentist will add it in place of the temporary crown, using a mild anesthetic to ensure you don’t feel any pain.
